Itinerary: ST4

Day 1 Arrive Delhi and drive to Nalagarh
Met on arrival in Delhi and drive (300kms/6-7hrs) straight to Nalagarh at the foothills. On arrival transfer to hotel Fort Nalagarh. Remaining day at leisure.

Day 2 Nalagarh/Manali
Morning drive (260kms – 8-9 hrs) to Manali (2050m) & on arrival transfer to hotel Ram Regency.

Day 3 Manali
Day free to explore the town.

Day 4 Manali/Darcha/ Palamu
Morning drive (155 km. - 7/8 hrs) to Palamu (3600m) via Rohtang Pass (3980m), Koksar (3100m), Tandi (2575m), Keylong (3350m) & Darcha (3350m)Camp on arrival on the river bank.

Day 5 Palamu/Zakar Sumdo
Starting with crossing of some side streams and boulder fields, the trail reaches at Jankar Sumdo (3860m). Camp on arrival. 4hrs trek.

Day 6 Sumdo/Chumnikpo
Cross the main river through the bridge and follow the left bank of the stream coming down from Shingola. A hard ascending trek to Chumniakpo (4640m) below the pass. Overnight camp. 6hrs trek.

Day 7 Chumnikpo/Shingola/base
From the camp, climb moderate slopes to the foot of the pass. Several easy stream-crossings. The trail then becomes steep and zig-zag through a moraine as far as the Shingo-la (5090m). The initial descent is steep. Cross a final last snow to reach the first meadows. Cross several easy streams, then go down to the meadows of Lakong (4470m) for camp. 5hrs trek.

Day 8 Base/Kargiyak
Continue climbing down to the confluence and ford the upper reaches of Kargyak river to the right bank. After one hour, you pass beneath the face of Gumburanjan peak, then an easy descent towards Kargyak (4100 m). O/n camp. 5hrs

Day 9 Kargiyak/Purne
Continue on the right bank along an easy path to the village of Tanze (3850m). From here cross over to the left bank of the river. Monotonous going across moraine terrain. Slight rise leading to Kuru (3990m), major village of livestock breeders. Afterwards, an excellent path leads steadily lower to Teta - a beautiful village. The path continues downward near the river. Stay on the left bank, then climb gentle slope up to Jal. Next comes a steep descent towards a large bridge on Kargyak river to cross over to Purne (3700m) - the confluence of Tsarap & Kargyak rivers. O/n camp. 7-8hrs

Day 10 Purne
The trail to Phuktal Monastery follows the true left bank for several km before reaching a makeshift bridge over the Tsarap river. From here the view of Phuktal monastery (3850m) high above on the limestone cliffside, is one of the most spectacular sights in Zanskar. Cross the bridge and climb up to the monastery which belongs to the tradition of the Gelupas (Yellow Hats). The Hungarian historian Cosma de Koros stayed here over the winter of 1825-26. Later return to Purne and spend the remaining day for recouping. O/n camp. 4-5hrs return.

Day 11 Purne/Ichar
From Purne, go back & cross the bridge, then go up the left bank. The trail that overhangs the Tsarap river is sometimes tricky and hard going. Pass below the village of Surle (3670m). The trail reaches the river bank near the bridge which leads to the village of Ichar. O/n camp. 5hrs trek.

Day 12 Ichar/Reru or Mune
Continuing on left bank, there is a gradual ascent to Reru (3850m).
The trail goes up to a plateau with village & monastery of Mune (3900m).
O/n camp. 5hrs.

Day 13 Reru/Mune/Padam
From here a dusty road suitable for motor traffic leads to Padam. After an hour, arrive at Bardan Gompa of Drukpa order, famous for its huge prayer wheel - one of the largest in Ladakh. From Bardan, 2hrs trek to Padam. Camp on arrival at Padum (3650 m) – district headquarter of Zanskar.

Day 14 Padam
Rest / Reserve Day

Day 15 Padam/Karsha/ Rinam
Morning start the Zanskar traverse through a dusty plain towards the Doda river. Cross the river, near its confluence with Tserup Chu - this will now onwards be called Zanskar river. After visiting Karsha - largest monastery in the Zanskar region - trek to Rinam (3550m). Total 4 hrs trek. O/n camp.

Day 16 Rinam/Pidmu
4 hours - An easy trail runs along the Zanskar river to Pidmu (3420m) via Pishu village. O/n camp.

Day 17 Pidmu/Hanumil
3 hours - Continue along the left bank of Zanskar river to Hanumil (3380m).

Day 18 Hanumil/Parfila /Snertse
5 hours - Follow the up & down rocky track along the Zanskar river in the beginning. Later steep ascent as far as Parfi La (3950m), followed by a steep descend of 500m to Oma Chu river. Cross the bridge near its confluence with Zanskar river and climb again 400m to Snertse (3850m).

Day 19 Snertse/Hanumala/ Lingshed
6 hours - Long gradual ascent towards Hanumala (4700m), followed by steep descent and then another 300m of ascent to Chapskangla. Then easy descent towards Lingshed (4000m). Camp near the monastery.

Day 20
Lingshed/Murgamla/Kupala/Seggela base
6 hours – Today again its an up and down trek with some wonderful landscapes between the two ridge passes – Murgamla (4100m) & Kubala (3850m). Camp at 4550m, at the foot of Singela.

Day 21 Cross Seggala/ Bumiktsela/ Photoksar
5/6 hours - The way leads to Singela (5050m) - the second highest pass of the entire route. Descend & trek through wide yak pastures. Later short ascend to Bumiktsela (4200m) and equally short descend to camp site before Photoksar (4100m).

Day 22 Photoksar/Sisirla/Hanupata
6 hours - From the village, long but gentle ascent to Sirsirla (4850m). Then a long descent into a stony valley. O/n camp at Hanupata (3760m).

Day 23 Hanupata/Wangla
5 hours - Continue on the descending slope before entering the gorges. Pass a ridge and go down towards Phanjila village (3410m). From here a dusty jeepable track leads to Wangla (3250m). O/n camp

Day 24 Wangla/Prinkitla/ Lamayuru and drive to Leh
Trek ends at Lamayuru – 3 hours - Follow Shilakong Nala along the right bank up to Shilla. Cross to left bank and turn right to dry narrow gully towards Prinkitla (3810m) - the last pass of the trail. From here descend to a small river-bed and climb again to Lamayuru (3420m). After visiting the monastery drive (125kms/4hrs) to Leh (3522m) and on arrival transfer to hotel.

Day 25 Leh
Full day excursion to Shey, Thiksay & Hemis monasteries.

Day 26 Leh
Morning half day city tour covering Shanti Stupa, Sankar Gompa and Leh Palace. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 27 Leh/Delhi
Early morning transfer to airport to connect flight (9W610 dep.0735hrs /arr.0850hrs). Met on arrival and transfer to hotel. Late night transfer to airport to connect homewards flight.

Day 28 Delhi Departure
Early morning board the flight.

Trip Cost Includes:

  • Accommodation on twin sharing for a total of 27 nights on full board (AP) fixed menu basis, except in Delhi on bed & breakfast (CP); based on hotels envisaged below.
  • All transportation - from arrival/departure transfers from airport to hotel and vice-versa, sightseeing, excursions; by an aircondition car in Delhi and by a non aircondition jeep/mini bus from Lamayuru to Leh & in Leh.
  • Sightseeing and excursion in Leh with an English speaking local guide and entrances to the places of interest.
  • All trekking/camping arrangements, i.e. two-men dome tent with carry-mat, kitchen cum mess tent, camping stools & table, crockery cutlery, kitchen utensils, stove, fuel, food, a cook, a helper and ponies to carry all camping gear & provisions.Personal baggage allowance of 15kg. per pax on the trek.
  • All presently applicable taxes like luxury tax on room, VAT on meals, and 3.9% Govt. Service Tax (GST) on Delhi to Manali portion of the package price (in Ladakh it is not applicable as-on-date).
  • Sherpa Travel, Inc. or its associates to accompany on the trek to ensure smooth arrangements.

Trip Cost Excludes:

  • Any airfare, airport tax, items of personal nature such as table drinks, mineral water bottles, laundry, telecom charges, camera/video camera fee, meals not specified above, sleeping bag & ‘Thermarest – self inflatory’ mattress, towel & toiletries, personal travel insurance, tips etc.
  • Any additional expenses to be incurred for the reasons beyond our control, like bad weather, road blocks, landslide, vehicle breakdown, flight delay/cancellation, medical/accidental/emergency evacuation etc.
  • Any meals or hotel accommodation in lieu of trekking/camping days in case the trek terminates early for any reason.
  • Any additional levies to be imposed by Govt of India or State Govt.
